Bioenergy conference in St Petersburg, May 16-17 2006

"Wood-based bioenergy in Russia and in the World".

During May 16-17 an international conference on wood-based bioenergy was held in St Petersburg. About 200 specialists from worldwide took part in a conference which was organized by THE SWEDISH FOREST AGENCY, THE WOOD INDUSTRIES CONFEDERATION OF NORTH-WEST RUSSIA, AND BIOFUEL REGION (SWEDEN) in the framework of the Russian-Swedish cooperation program.

The conference offered exciting speeches from well known Russian and Swedish speakers on following topics (please see the attached programme with theses and presentations):

The main issues were following:

- Issues of Russian state administration - how to support/steer the development,
- Legislation issues,
- Politics and strategic development,
- International trends in wood fuel markets,
- EU policies and goals,
- Social and economic options and effects,
- Energy supply to rural areas,
- Environmental aspects of production and use of wood fuels,
- Raw material supply and harvesting techniques,
- New technologies for production of wood chips and pellets,
- Biofuels for the transport sector.

A commercial exhibition on bioenergy and biofuel topics of the foreign and Russian companies took place in the framework of the conference as well.
